We
left home late afternoon on June 29 and drove to Custer to Carol and
Steve's. We stayed overnight there and then went on to Wyoming,
drove out to Newcastle, then north to Gillette and Interstate 90.
We were in the Big Horn Mountains when we turned onto a narrower road
to go to 'Dull Knife' reservoir. Jerry & Deanna Walters were
staying at the 'cabin' in the mountains and we agreed to meet them
there.
Their cabin is the one furtherest
away, to your right. Notice the antelope on left and twin babies
on the right! The water is Dull Knife reservoir. The Big
Horn Mountains are in the back ground. The wild flowers
were beautiful, the patches of purple Loopin where so pretty!
The left picture is taken from
their cabin, back up on the hill where the antelope were. The
right picture is the reservoir, the dam and spill way being to the
right side of the picture. That is their cabin on the hillside,
near the shore line.
Their cabin is actually up quite a
slop from the water. Yes, the outhouse shown is used! There
are no public utilities for these cabins, so they have their own
electricial generator, well and sewer system. Monica and Crystal
didn't know I was taking a picture! This is the kitchen at the
cabin......very nice and comfortable.
Left: This is their
living room with a beautiful fireplace. The spiral stair case
goes to the upstairs bathroom and 2 bedrooms.
Right: The elevation bothered Owen, so we went down to Ten Sleep
the next day. Dull Knife is about 8,400 ft. elevation, Ten Sleep
is about 4,400 ft, so we had a lot of down hill going. This
second picture is across the landscape, looking west, we are up very
high yet when this was taken. I have no idea how far we are
looking!!!
The view as we descended was
gorgeous! It was a bit hazy, but WOW, you could see so
far!!! I was amazed and stopped and took pictures quite often!
This red bluff on the left, we
could see for so many miles, it really intrigued me, so I took a lot of
pictures of it!! The bluff on the right is at Ten Sleep.
I guess I got this one a little out
of line, but the picture on the left is a deep gorge in the middle of a
flatter area with red bluffs. It was all so unique. The
picture on the right is Jerry and Deanna's house in Ten
Sleep. It was very hot while we were there.
Left: This was taken in Ten
Sleep. The red bluff is such a contrast to the blue river at
sunset. Pictures can't do it justice.
Right: This is an area south of Ten Sleep called 'Castle
Gardens', kind of a mini bad lands.
These were both taken at Castle
Gardens. On the left, you are looking through an area between
spires at the valley below and it is really 'below'!! On the
right are Deanna and Jerry standing on the formations.
These are more pictures taken at
the Castle Gardens. The sun was about to set, it was so pretty!!
Owen is standing on a pedestal on
the left. On the right is the Big Horn Mountains along Hwy. 16,
east of Ten Sleep.
These two views are of the Big
Horns along the drive east on Hwy 16. It was beautiful up there,
we really enjoyed it.
We arrived back in Custer
the afternoon of Tuesday, July 3.
One of the many oil wells we saw in
Wyoming.
We went to Cascade for the July 4th. We picniced at
Keith park. At the spring, there was a small pool, quite cold
tho! Cassie and Carol were brave to go in, the rest of us just
soaked our feet.
Carol packed a great picnic lunch for us, even made a very special
4th of July cake!!
After our dinner, we went down to
Cascade falls. It was terrible hot and quite a few people
there. A few nights later, this area was blackened with a huge
fire that was started by lightening. 10,300 acres burned along
with 33 homes.
On Thursday, July 5, Cassie, Mark, Owen and I toured the Black Hills a
bit. We went up the Needles highway and then came around and down
the Iron Mountain road. We ate lunch at Sylvan Lake resort and
were lucky enough to see a lot of animals.
The Needles (rocks) in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Cassie & Mark in the
'Needles'.
Mark & Cassie feeding the tame donkeys.
The donkey family.
This baby is very young, he wouldn't eat cheez
curls!! Buffalo on the hill, lots of them!!
Left: This is very unusual to
see this many rams in one place and by the road!! Those are
large, and old, note the horns.
Right: Can you find the Elk? It is right in the centr of
the picture!!! (very tiny) Cassie spotted them and we turned
around and went back and they took off. This was the best we
could photograph them!!!
That evening Owen and I went out to eat with Chuck, Lois
and Aunt Jean down at Hot Springs. A very nice evening.
We left Friday morning.
We were traveling on Interstate 90 and at Wall, SD,
decided to take the Badlands loop. Neither of us had been this
way in a long long time. It was beastly hot, but neat.
We enjoyed the Badlands of South Dakota.
We were home by 7 PM that
evening. Thanks for visiting our Summer trip.
