Gail Laverne Hilgenberg of Longmont and Allenspark died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at his home. He was 84. He was born Oct. 8, 1917, to Julius Martin and Clara Dean (Walker) Hilgenberg in Greene County, Iowa. On June 30, 1940, he married Frances Corwin in Artesian, S.D. He received a master's in guidance counseling from Colorado State University. Mr. Hilgenberg taught high school in South Dakota before moving to Longmont in 1967 and working as a junior high school counselor for 14 years. He was a 49-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a 30-year Lion. He was also a member of many teaching and education organizations. Mr. Hilgenberg was an ordained Presbyterian elder in the United Church at Hot Springs, S.D., and a member of the Allenspark Community Church.
He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Keith and Martin Hilgenberg; and a brother, Ronald Hilgenberg.
Mr. Hilgenberg is survived by his wife of Longmont and Allenspark; a son, Melvin Hilgenberg of Denver; a daughter, Janet Mahlman and her husband Jerry of Longmont; four grandchildren, Gary Mahlman of Longmont, Julie Mahlman-Kapecki and her husband Garrin of Lincolnshire, Ill., Stuart Hilgenberg of Estes Park and Louisa Hilgenberg of Lafayette, La.; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Collin Kapecki of Lincolnshire; a brother, Paul Hilgenberg and his wife Helen of Mitchell, S.D.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hilgenberg of Mesa, Ariz.; and seven nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at Allenspark Community Church, with Pastor Rex Roth officiating. A brief service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 25, at the Methodist Church in Artesian. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Boulder County or the Allenspark Community Church in care of Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel, 503 Terry St., Longmont 80501.
